Army Veteran And Former Columbus Councilman John House Leaves A Legacy Of Purpose-Driven Service

Whether it’s serving as a military officer or stepping up as a first responder, it takes a rare combination of dedication, resilience and heart to take on these roles. And for many of these individuals, that same drive carries over into life beyond the badge.

Colonel (Ret.) John House spent his life in service — first to his country, and later to the city he called home. After a distinguished 26-year career in the U.S. Army, including deployments and high-level leadership roles, House turned his focus to public service in Columbus, Georgia.

House served two terms as a City Councilor before resigning in April 2023. He brought a mission-focused mindset to local government, championing transparency, accountability, and strategic budgeting practices.

But House’s impact extended well beyond city council chambers. As reported by the Muscogee Muckraker, he consistently advocated for veterans, mentored young professionals and supported organizations working to improve quality of life in the Chattahoochee Valley. He was also vocal proponent of educational equity and infrastructure improvements, always keeping the needs of military families and public servants at the forefront.

“Service didn’t stop when I took off the uniform,” House told the Muscogee Muckraker. “It just took a new shape.”

His leadership was grounded in humility, community engagement and a profound respect for the people of Columbus. Whether guiding municipal policy or lending support to a local nonprofit, Col. House left a legacy of purpose-driven leadership that continues to inspire others.
