COLUMBUS, GA — A former Columbus police officer was among two people killed when a tree fell on their golf cart during Sunday's storm.

Police said Matthew Collins Jr., 29, was a former officer with the local department. His father, Matthew Collins Sr., 58, also died while they were at Bull Creek Golf Course.

A tree crushed their golf cart with them in it during the storm at the Midland course, National Weather Service meteorologist in charge Keith Spellman told Patch on Monday.

More than $23,000 had been raised for funeral expenses as of late Tuesday morning, surpassing a $20,000 goal, according to a GoFundMe. Organizers stated the Collins were able to share a final father-son moment together before their deaths.

"Matthew Jr. was a loyal friend, a kindhearted soul, and someone who always showed up for the people in his life. He shared a deep bond with his father, and losing both of them so suddenly is a devastating blow to everyone who knew and loved them," organizers wrote.

Gov. Brian Kemp said he was saddened to learn of the deaths of the Collins duo.

Funeral details were not immediately known Tuesday.
