Here are the top five stories today in Cumming:
- Keema Carson, who experienced homelessness after her house burned down, now dedicates her time to helping others in need. Every Thursday, she cooks hot meals for Atlanta's un-housed population at Tabernacle International Church. The Atlanta News Surprise Squad, along with Beaver Toyota of Cumming, presented Keema with a $3000 check to support her mission, along with a $500 gas card and car repairs, ensuring she can continue her deliveries to those in need. Keema's compassionate actions demonstrate the power of love and kindness in transforming lives, and she plans to use the money to provide umbrellas for the un-housed community in Atlanta. (Atlanta News First)
- Tameka Foster, a celebrity stylist and mother of five boys, tragically lost her son Kile Glover in a boating accident on Lake Lanier in 2012. Lake Lanier has seen around 500 deaths since its creation in 1956, and some believe it is haunted because it was built over the African American community of Oscarville, which was intentionally flooded. Foster started a Change.org petition to have the lake drained, cleaned, and additional safety measures put in place to prevent further tragedies and protect other families from experiencing the same grief she endured. You can sign the petition here. (Cassius Life)
- Forsyth County Senior Services will be hosting the Georgia Recreation and Park Association Senior Talent Show in September, showcasing the remarkable talents of seniors across the state. The deadline for acts to register is Aug. 18, and those interested can contact (770) 781-2178, option 2, or click here for more information. (Forsyth County, Georgia)
- The Forsyth County Sheriff's Office issues a warning about a scam involving fake calls about fines for missing jury duty. They emphasize that no one from the Sheriff's Office will contact individuals in such a manner and ask for money, urging anyone who receives one of these calls to hang up and not fall for the deception. - REMINDER: The Cumming Farmers Market is open every Wednesday and Saturday until the end of September from 6:30 a.m. - 11:00 a.m. in the City Center lower surface parking lot. Market options include fresh produce, baked goods, meat, jams, art and more. (Cumming City Center via Facebook)
