Cumming Cop Resigns Following Extortion Allegations
Sgt. Nathan VanBuren was cited for four policy violations in his termination letter; the sergeant opted to resign instead of being fired.

A former Cumming police officer is under state and federal investigation after allegations that the officer extorted money from someone surfaced earlier this month.
Sgt. Nathan VanBuren was given a termination letter dated Sept. 4 but opted to resign instead, WSB-TV reports. VanBuren’s termination letter cited four policy violations, including conduct unbecoming a police officer, improper use of his position for personal gain, and receiving something of value from a complainant, suspect, defendant, witness, or anyone involved in a case.
A citizen complaint earlier in the month prompted Cumming police to turn the case over to the FBI, which is now investigating the allegations. Cumming police said in a statement that they will continue to support the FBI’s investigation.
