Here are the top five stories in Cumming today:
- A man from Cumming reported that he was assaulted and robbed of his cell phone on May 29 while driving through a roundabout at Hopewell and Hubbard Town roads. The incident took place late in the evening when an SUV abruptly stopped in front of him, and an intoxicated or mistaken suspect approached his car, yelling and eventually hitting him. The victim reported the incident to the sheriff's office, and although his broken phone was later found, the investigation is still ongoing. (Appen Media)
- Experience the official Jimmy Buffett Tribute Show, A1A, live at the Cumming City Center Lou Sobh Amphitheater on Friday, Jul. 7 from 7:00-9:00 p.m. Led by vocalist and guitarist Jeff Pike, A1A has been entertaining audiences for over 30 years, capturing the spirit of Jimmy Buffett's music with their energetic and family-friendly performances. - The Forsyth County Sheriff's Office recognized Sgt. Terry Hawkins, who leads the Forsyth County CIRT Unit, a specialized unit addressing mental health crises in the community. Recently, Hawkins was appointed to the ACCG Standing Committee on Mental Health & Substance Abuse, a role that involves creating an information clearinghouse to support Georgia counties in tackling mental health issues. In his position as co-chair of the Data/Evaluation/Mapping Subcommittee, Hawkins will contribute to identifying resources, implementing initiatives, and fostering partnerships to make a meaningful impact. - The Forsyth County Board of Commissioners plans to maintain the current millage rates for Maintenance and Operations, Bond, and Fire without any changes. Although the rates remain the same, the growth in the tax digest will result in a net increase of 9.58 percent in property taxes for Maintenance and Operations. The county's 2024 general operating budget, still in the preliminary stages, will be funded by these unchanged millage rates, which are among the lowest in metro Atlanta. Public hearings will be held to gather input before the final millage rate is adopted on Jul. 20. (Forsyth County, Georgia)
- Antisemitic flyers and packages have been discovered in Warner Robins, Georgia, with the incidents occurring around the Peach Blossom Road area. Authorities are urging anyone with information to contact the Warner Robins Police Department or Macon Regional Crimestoppers. This comes in the wake of similar incidents across metro Atlanta, including nearby areas of Sandy Springs, Dunwoody, Roswell, Atlanta, and Marietta, highlighting an ongoing concern. Additionally, legislative efforts to define and address antisemitism in Georgia law faced obstacles during the past legislative session. (Atlanta News First)
