Here are the top five stories today in Cumming:

  1. Cumming native Artem Shmidt is preparing for the elite "Super Worlds" cycling competition, which will take place next week in Glasgow, Scotland. Shmidt is competing in the U23 road cycling race in the UCI Cycling World Championships, in what is considered to be the largest world championship contingent in U.S. history. 2. CPR and AED training, both in-person and virtual, are now available, and you can sign up online to learn more about how these vital services can save lives. Studies have shown that a person’s chance of survival drops seven to 10 percent every minute once they experience a sudden cardiac arrest. With ready access to an automated external defibrillator (AED) and CPR training, bystanders can jump in and provide more immediate assistance to save lives. (Avive Life Forsyth County)
  3. A new exhibit is coming to the Forsyth County Public Libraries honoring victims of the Holocaust. This touring banner exhibit, "Witness to the Holocaust," will visit public libraries statewide to promote public understanding of this moment in history. Visitors can view the exhibit at the Cumming Library from Aug. 10 to Sept. 12. (Forsyth County Public Library)
  4. Think you have seen a UFO? You're not alone—there have been more than 2,600 UFO sightings in Georgia, and Cumming ranks as number five in the state for the most sightings. Most recently, in 2020, there were numerous reports of a large red light resembling a Ferris wheel near Lake Lanier. Click the link to read more extraterrestrial stories from across the state. 5. In search of a furry friend to join your family? Cumming area shelters have many adoptable pets in the area looking for a loving home. Petfinder pulls together all the options in one place—including Apricot, a sweet terrier mix, Anderson, an adorable hound, and Charlie, a loving chocolate lab. Check out the link for more details.
