Here are the top five stories in Cumming today:

  1. Financial experts say Georgia is a great alternative for retirement to well-known destinations, such as Florida. Retirement planners recommended the Peach State for its affordability, tax friendliness, and great economy. Cumming ranked within the top six towns to retire within the state. Forsyth County is deemed one of the safest and wealthiest counties in Georgia. Cumming's access to the Blueridge Mountains and Lake Lanier also makes the city desirable for retirees. (Wealth Of Geeks)
  2. Crews have started widening Old Atlanta Road in Forsyth County along James Burgess Road to St. Marlo Country Club Parkway. Travelers are encouraged to seek alternate routes while the construction is taking place. Tree clearing and other area cleaning will occur daily for the next four to six months. (Atlanta News First)
  3. Wright's Fish and Chips, a new restaurant offering British fare, recently opened inside the Cumming City Center. The staple menu option is the classic fish and chips (fries) made with a lightly battered cod and served with chips just the way you would get in the United Kingdom. The restaurant also offers other great traditional dishes, such as British pies, bangers (sausage), and various pastries and teas. Wright's is open Tuesday through Sunday every week. (Fox 5 Atlanta)
  4. The annual Memorial Day Celebration at the Veterans War Memorial will occur on May 26. The celebration is put on by the city and local veteran organizations and will honor those who have served, are serving, and those who have lost their lives in service. The ceremony begins at 11 a.m. If it rains that day, an alternate location at the fairgrounds has been arranged. (City of Cumming E-News)
  5. The Coffee and the Juice Box "Summer Safety" event with the Forsyth County Sheriff's Department is happening today at 9:30 a.m. The event at the Midway Park Community Building will feature different guests every second Tuesday of each month, with this month being the sheriff's office and the Forsyth County Public Library. If you can't make it this morning, more opportunities will be available throughout the summer. (Forsyth County Parks and Recreation via Facebook)
