Cumming Woman Killed in Ga. 400 Crash

The wrong-way driver collided head on with another vehicle on Sunday morning; alcohol is suspected as a factor in the incident.

A wrong-way driver was killed when she collided-head on with another vehicle on Georgia 400 on Sunday morning, the Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office said.

Maria Gonzalez, 21, of Cumming was driving southbound on northbound Georgia 400 between exits 13 and 14 in a Honda Accord when she crashed into a Nissan Xterra driven by Ashley Held, 27, of Cumming. The collision occurred just south of North Old Atlanta Road.

The two vehicles rotated and came to rest with Held’s vehicle rolling on to the driver’s side, causing her to become entrapped in the vehicle. Forsyth County fire crews were able to retrieve Held from the Xterra, and was rushed to Grady Memorial Hospital in critical condition. She is now in serious condition, deputies said.

Gonzalez died at the scene from the injuries she sustained in the crash and was turned over to the Forsyth County Coroner’s Office.

The crash remains under investigation by the Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office Crash Investigations Unit. Alcohol is suspected as a factor in the crash.
