Here are the top five stories today in Cumming:

  1. The Forsyth County Department of Water & Sewer plans to make changes to improve the taste and smell of the county's drinking water. The department is rolling out a new treatment, called Ozone, that will remove 2-Methylisoborneol and Geosmin — trace compounds that are not hazardous to humans, but can lead to a muskier taste and odor.   2. On Aug. 19, Forsyth County Parks and Recreation will officially unveil Lanierland Park's new tennis and pickleball courts, baseball/softball fields, Miracle League field, walking path, and all-inclusive playground, among other new amenities, as part of phase II of the park's expansion project. The unveiling will take place at 9:00 a.m. at 6115 Jot-Em-Down Rd. (Forsyth County Georgia Government via Facebook)
  3. Heads up, drivers: This Thursday, Jul. 20 and Friday, Jul. 21, construction on SR 400 near Exit 18 is expected to cause overnight traffic delays and lane closures. Beginning at 9:00 p.m. on Jul. 20, crews will be removing and replacing overhead cables and signs. Work is scheduled to end at 5:00 a.m. on Jul. 21. (NewsBreak)
  4. Forsyth County Schools announced that it still has openings for its middle schools for the 2023-2024 school year. Jobs like middle school math and science teacher, family and consumer science teacher, and speech language pathologist are included in the open positions. Learn more and apply here.   5. Pinecrest Academy recently began construction on a second entrance into the school's campus, a project several years in the making. The second entrance will go in at the intersection of Peachtree Parkway and Stoney Point Road, where an existing traffic light is already located, with an anticipated completion date during the fall semester of the 2023-2024 school year.   • Local Girl Scout Troop 21710 recently spent a day at the Humane Society of Forsyth County to help beautify the entrance.
