Here are the top five stories in Cumming today:

  1. On Thursday, Jul. 27, a tragic single-car crash occurred on Flowery Branch Road, resulting in the deaths of a husband and wife after their vehicle overturned and left the roadway. Alice Jackson, 91, was driving the Cadillac when it drifted from the road at Shadow Lane, and in an attempt to correct it, the vehicle overturned on an embankment. The crash led to the fatalities of both Jackson and her husband, Jimmy, also 91. (Cumming Patch)
  2. The Forsyth County Sheriff's Office congratulated Bill Finch, the Forsyth County solicitor-general, on receiving the Solicitor-General of the Year award from the Georgia Association of Solicitor-Generals (GASG) at the Prosecuting Attorneys Council's Summer Conference. Finch was recognized for his outstanding service to the community and collaborative efforts with GASG on legislative initiatives during the 2023 legislative session.   3. Purple Pansies is inviting attendees to its annual Pillars of Hope Gala featuring an "Illumination" themed event on Sunday, Sep. 10. The event will feature a delectable multi-course wine dinner by Casa Nuova Italian Restaurant, a pre-dinner cocktail hour with live music, and various auctions and presentations. The gala's mission is to provide immediate support to those impacted by pancreatic cancer and fund research and clinical trials to combat the disease.   4. A tragic incident occurred at Lake Lanier over the weekend, where a 24-year-old man died after jumping off a dock into the water and being shocked by electricity. Officials from the Georgia Department of Natural Resources responded to the scene at Lanier Beach South Road in Forsyth County. The victim was taken to Northside Forsyth Hospital but unfortunately passed away, and his identity has not been disclosed. The cause of the electrification in the water has not been revealed, and authorities are continuing their investigation. (WSBTV)
  5. Bruno Cua, a 21-year-old man from nearby Milton has been sentenced to one year and a day in prison for assaulting a law enforcement officer during the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol. After attending the rally at the Washington Monument, Cua separated from his parents and entered the Capitol building, where he violently shoved a Capitol Police officer trying to lock the doors to the Senate Gallery, and later sat in the vice president's chair. He made multiple statements on social media about his plans to violently interrupt the proceedings certifying Joe Biden's election as president, and after the attack, he admitted his involvement and expressed the possibility of future violence.
