Here are the top five stories in Cumming today:

  1. Paving and striping work on SR 306 (Keith Bridge Road) at the SR 369 (Browns Bridge Road) in Forsyth County intersection will continue until Jul. 14. The work will be conducted day and night, with intermittent breaks, covering approximately a quarter mile north and south of the intersection. Drivers should anticipate lane closures, traffic pacing, and potential delays, and are advised to exercise caution, reduce speed, and remain vigilant in the area. (Forsyth County, GA - Government)
  2. Nick Vernola and his brother Mike brought the joy of music to residents at the Oaks at Hampton assisted living facility in Cumming. Through their performance of classic songs from the "Great American Songbook," the Vernola brothers transported residents back to their youth, reanimating memories and fostering a sense of connection. With a repertoire of over 300 songs, the Vernolas bring joy and nostalgia to senior living facilities across North Georgia. (Appen Media)
  3. The Forsyth County Board of Commissioners is accepting sealed bids until Jul. 27 for two properties located at 1929 Sharon Road and 7305 Lanier Drive. The properties have specific zoning designations and bids will be opened and awarded at a later date. Bidders must include a $10,000 earnest money deposit with their bid, and more information can be obtained from the Forsyth County Attorney's office. (Forsyth County, GA - Government)
  4. The University of North Georgia's (UNG) new president plans to go on a 45-day "listening tour" to collect input from faculty regarding challenges faced by the university, such as state budget cuts and declining student enrollment. In an email to faculty, the president announced his intention to gather feedback and ideas to address these issues effectively. The listening tour aims to engage the university community in finding solutions and shaping the future of UNG. (Subscription: Forsyth County News)
  5. Did you know? Lake Lanier, located near Cumming, was created in the 1950s as part of a water and power project, but its construction involved displacing local residents and relocating graveyards. The lake's history is marred by social injustice and the abandonment of "ghost towns." Urban legends about hauntings and accidents have added to its eerie reputation, with stories of a ghost known as The Lady of the Lake and numerous tragic incidents that have occurred over the years. Additionally, Lake Lanier's cluttered floor makes rescue operations difficult, contributing to its reputation as a dangerous body of water. (UNILAD)
