Here are the top five stories today in Cumming:

  1. A state senate bill that would expand school credits in Georgia faced setbacks Thursday after the House of Representatives declined to vote on it. The bill was proposed by Cumming Republican Greg Dolezal and would provide $6,500 to families who choose to withdraw their child from an underperforming public school. Senate Bill 233 was debated for an hour and a half before legislators postponed the decision. (GEORGIA LAW NEWS)
  2. An event at the Cumming Fairgrounds this weekend is expected to have a worldwide audience thanks to the power of ham radio. The annual ham radio event, "Field Day," encourages ham operators to test their skills in the field on Jun. 24-25. The Sawnee Amateur Radio Association will be at the Cumming Fairground RV sites to do just that, and visitors are invited to stop by and learn from licensed operators. (Appen Media)
  3. Pinecrest Academy is hosting an educational Minecraft Summer Camp for rising fourth- to ninth-grade students. The one-week camp is led by a Microsoft-certified educator and will task campers with completing daily STEM challenges. The first session launched this week, but Pinecrest will host two additional sessions beginning Jun. 26 and Jul. 10. Visit the link for registration details. (Cumming Patch)
  4. The Family Movies program has returned to Vickery Village for the summer. Featured movies include "The Super Mario Brothers" on Jun. 27 and "Lyle, Lyle, Crocodile" on Jul. 25.
