Here are the top five stories today in Cumming:

  1. The Forsyth County District Attorney has expressed disappointment over the sentence given to a Milton woman who pleaded guilty to charges related to a hit-and-run case that resulted in the death of a local teen in 2020. Prosecutors had requested a more substantial sentence than what was ultimately handed down. The woman received the sentence despite her guilty plea, leading to dissatisfaction among prosecutors. 2. The Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office is investigating burglaries targeting the Indian/Asian communities and has increased police presence in the south end of the county. Residents are urged to be vigilant and report any suspicious activities to 911 or provide home security camera footage to aid the investigation. The community is reminded to lock vehicles, secure valuables, and ensure home security measures are in place to prevent such incidents. (Forsyth County Sheriff's Office via Facebook)
  3. Teachers As Tutors, located in nearby Alpharetta, is seeking experienced teachers to offer tutoring services in Cumming and Alpharetta homes as well as at their Alpharetta office. They are particularly looking for special education tutors in all subjects. The company offers competitive pay, ranging between $52 and $58.50 per hour for in-home tutoring. Interested individuals can send their resumes to lorispencer.teacher@gmail.com or contact Lori Spencer at (404) 542-2795. More information is available here. (Cumming Patch)
  4. Join the Forsyth County Humane Society for their first Barkers Bazaar event on Sunday, Aug. 20. The event will feature local vendors and adoption opportunities from 1:00-5:00 p.m. at 4440 Keith Bridge Road in Cumming. This is a great chance to support the Humane Society and potentially find a furry friend to adopt. (Humane Society of Forsyth County, GA via Facebook)
  5. Given recent severe weather and power outages, it's important to ensure your landscape irrigation system controller is functioning correctly and set to appropriate days and times. About 50 percent of irrigation water is lost due to inefficient methods and systems. In Georgia, watering landscapes between 10:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. is prohibited year-round to reduce water waste, and the EPA's WaterSense weather-based irrigation controllers offer efficient watering.
