Here are the top five stories in Cumming today:

  1. Organizers of a drag performance event scheduled to take place at a Forsyth County government building have announced its cancellation. The event, called "A Family Fun Show," was supposed to take place on Apr. 23 at Sexton Hall in Cumming; however, refunds will be given to more than 150 guests who had already purchased tickets. The organizers released a statement apologizing for any unintended political implications and stating that their intention was solely to entertain and have fun. (Subscription: Forsyth County News)
  2. Two students from the University of North Georgia (UNG) received the Barry Goldwater Scholarship in 2023. Junior Haley Menees, from Cumming, and Aysia Bittinger, a sophomore from Augusta, were two out of 413 college students selected nationwide from 1,267 nominees. The Goldwater Scholarship aims to encourage exceptional students to pursue research careers in natural sciences, engineering, and mathematics, and each student will receive up to $15,000 over two years.   3. On Apr. 20, you can get a sweet treat and support a good cause at Jeremiah's Ice of Cumming. From 3-9 p.m., 20 percent of proceeds will be donated to Big Creek Elementary School. Be sure to mention the school upon purchase. (Big Creek Elementary via Twitter)
  4. Forsyth County Senior Services is hosting the 19th annual Aging Well Expo this week, which is free and open to active and senior adults, their families, friends, and caregivers. The event will feature over 70 local businesses and service providers, such as senior residential communities, legal services, recreational opportunities, and home care. It will take place on Thursday, Apr. 20, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Forsyth Conference Center, located at 3410 Ronald Reagan Blvd. You can learn more about the event here.   5. This Friday, Apr. 21, is the opening night for "Little Shop of Horrors" presented by Forsyth Central Stage. The opening night performance will take place at 7 p.m., and additional performances will take place on Apr. 22 and Apr. 28-29 at the same time. Matinee performances are scheduled for Apr. 22 and Apr. 29 at 2 p.m. The event will take place at Forsyth Central High School's Performing Arts Center. Tickets are available here.
