Here are the top five stories today in Cumming:

  1. The Forsyth County School District had to make changes to its high school football schedule due to severe weather damage to North Forsyth High School's football field in Cumming. The stadium scoreboard was severely damaged during the storms, leaving glass scattered across the field and making it unsafe for students. The school plans to remove and install new turf to fully restore the field before its homecoming game on Sep. 15, but in the meantime, the team will play its first two games on East Forsyth High School's field. (WSB-TV)
  2. Age Friendly Forsyth (AFF), a non-profit organization, has launched the Age-Friendly Advocate program with funding from AARP. The initiative aims to provide free educational sessions to participants from faith communities, senior centers, and other organizations supporting older adults in Forsyth County. These advocates will receive comprehensive information about aging resources and skills to support and inform those seeking information about aging services in the community. The first educational session will take place on Aug. 24. For more information or to register for the session, contact Betty Branch-Baylor at Betty@agefriendlyforsyth.org. (Winston-Salem Chronicle)
  3. Multiple residents in Forsyth County have reported brown-colored water coming from their faucets. Public officials have stated the water is safe to drink, cook with, and bathe in but residents are hesitant. It's been reported the discoloration is due to minerals being jostled during previous storms. (WFMY)
  4. The Forsyth County Voter Registrations and Elections Office is seeking poll workers for upcoming election cycles, and they are open to individuals aged 16 and older. Applicants must meet certain qualifications, including residency requirements, language proficiency in English, and attendance at mandatory training sessions. Interested individuals can attend preview sessions at the County Voter Registrations and Elections Office, and more information on duties and requirements can be found at forsythco.com/pollworkers or by contacting 770-781-2118 or pollworker@forsythco.com. (Appen Media)
  5. As the last full week of summer break wraps up and families prepare for the new school year by stocking up on supplies, Forsyth County's School Resource Officers are also getting ready to ensure students' safety. The officers are undergoing training to be well-prepared and equipped to keep the students safe throughout the school year. (Subscription: Forsyth County News)
