Power Outage Culprit Revealed -- And It's Furry

An unwanted guest disabled a breaker at a substation Tuesday morning, causing thousands of Forsyth County homes and businesses to go dark.

Thousands of homes and businesses in Forsyth County lost power Tuesday morning after a squirrel accidentally disabled equipment at a substation, a Sawnee EMC spokesman said.

The squirrel climbed up to the top of the substation off of Windward Parkway just beyond the Forsyth County line and disabled a breaker that knocked out power to 3,600 customers in Forsyth County and parts of Fulton and Gwinnett counties, Sawnee EMC vice president of member services Blake House said.

House said that it took about an hour for workers to repair the damage and restore power. The lights went back on at approximately 11:45 a.m., House said.
