Report: Owner of Forsyth Airport Removes Headstones From Family Cemetery

The old cemetery lies under an airstrip at Mathis Airport on property set for a residential development.

The owner of Mathis Airport in Forsyth County, which sits on property set for a residential development, allegedly removed old headstones from a family cemetery that lies under an airstrip, WSB-TV reports.

Joe Voyles of Duluth, who was preparing to sell the property in Suwanee to a homebuilder for $1.4 million, was arrested and charged with two counts of criminal trespass, misdemeanors, but escaped a possible felony charge, according to the station.

Voyles, disclosing his intention to sell the property, filed a federal court document in which he allegedly swore there were no cemeteries, graves, burial grounds or historic artifacts on the property, according to WSB-TV. The buyer declined to prosecute on the alleged false statement charge.
