Here are the top five stories today in Cumming:

  1. The City of Cumming has named PJ Girvan as its new police chief. With a strong local background and a desire to enhance community policing, Girvan aims to build positive relationships between officers and residents. He plans to prioritize hiring, community-oriented events, and fostering a sense of unity within the department. (Subscription: Forsyth County News)
  2. On Jun. 21, Warrants were taken out for the arrest of Dayshenell Hewit, of Gwinnett County. She is accused of filing a fraudulent insurance claim by submitting false receipts for three surgeries on her daughter that were never performed. She collected $2,500 from the insurance company before the current investigation discovered they were fraudulent. She remains a fugitive. (WSBTV)
  3. The American Automobile Association (AAA) of Georgia is participating in the 25th Annual Tow To Go program this Fourth of July weekend. The program will provide a free ride and tow for impaired drivers and disabled vehicles to a destination located within a 10-mile radius. The program is a community service effort to keep impaired and dangerous drivers off the road. The service is free and active from 6:00 p.m. tonight, Jun. 30 to 6:00 a.m. Wednesday, Jul. 5. They ask drivers to reserve the service as a "last resort" if they cannot make safety arrangements themselves. (AAA)
  4. A two-alarm apartment fire broke out early Thursday morning at the Walden Pond Apartments on Bells Ferry Road in nearby Cherokee County. Fortunately, no injuries have been reported, and fire officials have confirmed that the fire has been extinguished. Witnesses observed thick smoke visible for miles, but the cause of the fire remains unknown at this time. (WSBTV)
  5. In case you missed it: Georgia's peach crop has suffered a significant blow due to a winter freeze, leading to a natural disaster declaration for 18 counties in the state. To support affected farmers – including those in Forsyth County – the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) is providing crucial loans to help mitigate the damage. The loans, offered through the USDA's Farm Service Agency, can be utilized for various purposes, such as purchasing farm equipment, reorganizing farming operations, or refinancing existing loans, with the aim of aiding the recovery of Georgia's vital peach industry.
