Here are the top five stories today in Cumming:
- The Thomas-Mashburn Steam Engine Parade drew a crowd of thousands into Cumming to celebrate the 4th of July. The 66th annual celebration was filled with floats and antique cars and steam engines. At the conclusion of the parade, the fairgrounds hosted vendors, family events, and live music, among others, followed by fireworks at 9:30 p.m. (Appen Media)
- Cumming-based Estancia Holdings announced a recall yesterday of one lot of Tome Corse Sheep Ottavi, saying it could be contaminated with Listeria. The contaminating organism, Listeria Monocytogenes, can be deadly to elderly persons, young children, and those with compromised immune systems. The possibly contaminated cheese was initially sold in Oregon. (WSB Atlanta)
- Three students from Cumming — Herui Li, a sophomore at South Forsyth High School, Alexis Berman, a senior at South Forsyth High School, and Pranav Raghavendra, a junior at Alliance Academy for Innovation — attended the Camp Logistics at University of North Georgia from Jun. 26 through June 29. The program was designed to provide an introduction to logistics and supply chain management and encourage young people to embark on a career in the discipline. (News at UNG)
- A tow truck driver from Cumming was pronounced dead at the scene of a head-on collision on Wednesday. According to investigators, 48-year-old Salvador Cervantes Bernal was traveling in his F-150 when a Dodge Ram, driven by 24-year-old Yamilet Sanchez Pagan, crossed the eastbound lane and struck the F-150.Pagan, was taken to the hospital and will be charged with homicide by vehicle 1st degree, driving under the influence of drugs, reckless driving, driving while license suspended, failure to maintain lane, and failure to maintain insurance. She will be taken into custody when she is released from the hospital. (WSB Atlanta)
