Winter Fun Can Be Dangerous: Authorities

Forsyth County Fire Department division chief says Georgia children are not accustomed to ice, snow and the hazards of winter fun.

Parts of metro-Atlanta, including Cumming, expect to welcome winter to the South on Wednesday. Forsyth County Public School students have the day off and the opportunity to play in the white, fluffy stuff, but officials are reminding parents that winter fun and games can be dangerous if you aren’t being careful.

β€œIn Georgia, our children are not raised here in the ice and snow like in other parts of the country,” Jason Shivers, division chief with the Forsyth County Fire Department told CBS 46.

One boy in Forsyth County was seriously injured in 2014 when his sled ran into a fire hydrant, Shivers said.

Here are some safety precautions parents and children should take while enjoying winter:

  • Do not sled near trees, fences, stumps, fire hydrants or vehicles
  • Do not pull a sled on the back of an ATV or any vehicle
  • Do not walk or skate on ice that can be dangerous (ponds in neighborhoods)
