CUMMING, GA — It's amazing the difference that 30 minutes will make on your commute. Leaving earlier or later could mean sitting in the car less, or it could also mean finishing an entire audiobook. New U.S. Census Bureau data looked at 5 years of commuting patterns in and around Cumming.
It found that the highest percentage of workers in Cumming start their commute between 7 a.m. and 7:29 a.m. The second most frequent window was between 8 a.m. and 8:30 a.m., just ahead of the half-hour beginning at 7:30 a.m.
One-in-five commuters in Cumming work a non-traditional shift, heading to work between 9 a.m. and midnight. That's fewer than the state and national average of an estimated one-in-four commuters.

The census released the data Thursday as part of the American Community Survey, which collected five years of data on more than 40 topics, including several questions about the local commute.

1. Only 37 percent of city residents work in the city.
2. Nearly 16 percent of city residents carpool.
3. Less than 1 percent of city residents work from home.
4. 45 percent of workers in the city had 2 cars at home.
