UPDATED: Dacula High Student Died of Blood Clot

Christopher Smith, 18, suffered a pulmonary embolism when a blood clot traveled from his leg to his lungs according to the medical examiner's office.

Officials have identified the student who as Christopher Smith, 18. Smith collapsed during school and was taken to the hospital.

Gwinnett County Medical Examiner Ted Bailey said cause of death was a pulmonary embolism. A pulmonary embolism occurs when a clot travels through the body and blocks one or more arteries in the lung.

According to the Mayo Clinic, clots often originate in the legs. The condition can occur in otherwise healthy people.

Bailey said the origin of the clot is not yet known, but may have been caused by an injury Smith suffered within the past few weeks.

"We don't know at this time. We're still looking into that," Bailey said.

Funeral arrangements for Smith have not yet been finalized.
