Off-Duty Georgia Gwinnett Officer Helps Shock Woman Back To Life
CPR and defibrillator training used to help save a woman suffering cardiac arrest at YMCA.

GWINNETT COUNTY, GA β Quick thinking by an off-duty Georgia Gwinnett College police officer helped save the life of a woman suffering cardiac arrest earlier this month in Winder.
Ashley Still was in the weight room at the Winder Barrow Brad Akins YMCA when an employee told her a woman watching her grandchildren swimming had collapsed near the pool.
βI immediately recognized it as full cardiac arrest,β said Still, a six-year veteran of the collegeβs police force. She stepped in to lead the resuscitation effort, using CPR and then the Yβs defibrillator to shock the womanβs heart into beating β and it worked.

Still, who lives in Monroe, also happens to be lead Georgia Gwinnett Collegeβs certified trainer for automated external defibrillators like the one she used at the Y. That came in handy.
βThe training definitely kicked in,β Still said to Jackie Todd of Georgia Gwinnett College. βSo many times repetitively teaching about it β it just took over. Everything worked exactly how itβs supposed to.β

Still was quick to credit the efforts of the Winder YMCAβs employees in saving the womanβs life.
βThe YMCA was fantastic in initiating the emergency response,β Still told Patch. βIf it wasnβt for them starting everything, we wouldnβt be where we are now.β
For Still, the incident was personal: Her own father died of a heart attack.
βI get what loss is about,β Still said. βIf I can prevent loss or hurt or sadness β whether itβs crime or health-related β thatβs my ultimate goal.β
Still told Patch she later spoke with the womanβs daughter, who said her mother was βstill in the hospital but doing well.β
