GA Coronavirus: Gwinnett Now First For Total COVID-19 Cases

Gwinnett County passed Fulton County for the first time Saturday for most confirmed cases of COVID-19 since the pandemic began.

ATLANTA, GA — Gwinnett County has now reported more cases of COVID-19 than any other county in Georgia.

In Saturday’s daily report from state’s health department, Gwinnett pulled ahead of Fulton County for the first time since the pandemic began, reporting 45,092 cases of COVID-19 confirmed since the coronavirus pandemic began. Fulton reported 45,082.

Of Georgia’s 159 counties, Gwinnett is the second most populous with about 936,000 residents as of 2019. Fulton County, where the City of Atlanta is located, has just more than 1 million residents.

Georgia Coronavirus Numbers For Dec. 19, 2020

The Georgia Department of Public Health in Atlanta reported a total of 504,501 confirmed cases of COVID-19 at 2:50 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 19. According to the health department’s website, that includes 4,298 newly confirmed cases of COVID-19 over the last 24 hours. In addition, Georgia reported 1,731 new antigen-positive cases over the last 24 hours, which are considered to be probable cases of COVID-19.

Georgia has reported 9,435 deaths so far from COVID-19, with 40 more confirmed deaths recorded in the last 24 hours. Georgia also reported 946 probable deaths from COVID-19 since the pandemic began. These probable deaths include fatalities with indirect evidence of COVID-19.

Georgia reported 39,310 hospitalizations — 246 more than the day before — and 7,045 admissions so far to intensive-care units.

No information is available from Georgia about how many patients have recovered.

Counties in or near metro Atlanta and other metropolitan areas continue to have the highest number of COVID-19 positives, with Gwinnett County now in the lead and Fulton County very close behind it. These statistics do not include antigen-positive cases.

Globally, more than 76 million people have tested positive for COVID-19, and more than 1.68 million people have died from it, Johns Hopkins University reported Saturday.

In the United States, more than 17.5 million people have been infected and nearly 315,000 people have died from COVID-19 as of Saturday. The U.S. has only about 4 percent of the world's population but more confirmed cases and deaths than any other country.
