Georgia Museum of Art to offer tours, family crafts and dancing in UGA’s annual Spotlight on the Arts

As part of the University of Georgia’s nine-day Spotlight on the Arts festival (Nov. 7–15), which celebrates performing, visual and literary arts, the Georgia Museum of Art is organizing 11 events, all of which are free and open to the public.

On Nov. 7, at 2 p.m., the museum will hold “Artful Conversation,” an in-depth discussion of the exhibition “The Crossroads of Memory: Carroll Cloar and the American South” with Carissa DiCindio, curator of education. Student Night will run from 8 to 10:30 p.m. the same day. The Georgia Museum of Art Student Association hosts this event featuring tours of the exhibitions, crafts, food and after-hours fun.
 
Nov. 8 and 12, at 2 p.m., museum docents will lead a guided tour highlighting works from the permanent collection.

Nov. 10, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., the museum will hold a special extended Family Day. Visitors will do a gallery activity with the exhibition “The Crossroads of Memory: Carroll Cloar and the American South” and create their own narrative works of art. At 1 p.m., locals kids’ band Like, Totally! will perform, sponsored by the Office of the Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs and Provost.
 
Following Family Day, at 3 p.m., Lynn Boland, Pierre Daura Curator of European Art, will lead a Spotlight Tour on the exhibition “Cercle et Carré and the International Spirit of Abstract Art.”

On Nov. 13 at 2 p.m., museum director William Underwood Eiland will lead a special Director’s Tour focusing on the permanent collection.

On Nov. 14 at 2 p.m., Asen Kirin will lead a tour of the exhibition he organized for the museum, “Exuberance of Meaning: The Art Patronage of Catherine the Great (1762–1796).” At 4:15 p.m. the same day is Gallery Games: Parts of a Whole. Callan Steinmann, associate curator of education for the museum, will lead this special interactive gallery tour for kids ages 7–11. That evening, from 8 p.m. to midnight, is Museum Mix, a late-night art party with live music by DJ Quincy, free refreshments and access to all the museum’s galleries.
 
Finally, on Nov. 15 at 2 p.m., Laura Valeri, associate curator of European art, will lead a tour of “Cercle et Carré and the International Spirit of Abstract Art.”

The Spotlight on the Arts festival is presented by the UGA Arts Council, of which the museum is a participating unit. More than 60 events are scheduled during the festival, many of which are free. For more information and a complete schedule of events, see arts.uga.edu.
