Gwinnett Kayaker's Body Pulled From Chattahoochee River

The body of a Lawrenceville man whose kayak was found near the Gwinnett-Forsyth county line was recovered Tuesday from the Chattahoochee.

GWINNETT COUNTY, GA — The search for a Lawrenceville man who disappeared Monday while kayaking ended Tuesday night when he was pulled from the Chattahoochee River.

A Gwinnett County rescue team recovered the body of David Southin, 41, late Tuesday near the Gwinnett-Forsyth county line, according to multiple media reports.

A Facebook post from a family friend said that Southin had parked his truck in Suwanee, and his phone “died around 6 or 7 p.m” Monday. His kayak was later found floating down the Chattahoochee by Forsyth County authorities.

Rescuers from both Gwinnett and Forsyth counties as well as several state agencies began combing the area Monday, but were forced to stop when fog and darkness set in. They started searching again Tuesday morning and found Southin’s body after nightfall.

The incident is under investigation, according to a spokesperson for the Georgia Department of Natural Resources, as reported by The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.
