Here are the latest local updates on how the coronavirus outbreak is affecting Gwinnett County:

GWINNETT COUNTY, GA β€” The new coronavirus outbreak in Georgia and across the nation continues to affect Gwinnett County, where schools are closed for the rest of the academic year and businesses remain shuttered in an effort to slow the spread of the virus.

The number of confirmed coronavirus cases and deaths in Georgia continues to rise: 5,444 total on Thursday, 1,129 hospitalized and 176 dead. At 6:30 p.m. Thursday, the Georgia Department of Public Health reports Fulton County's 747 cases are the most of any Georgia locality, with 23 deaths recorded. The highest number of deaths is in Dougherty County, with 30; its total number of cases rank second at 521. The next highest number of cases are in DeKalb with 409 cases, Cobb with 341 cases, Gwinnett with 303 cases, Bartow with 153 cases and Carroll with 139 cases.

Gwinnett County has 61 more cases and six more deaths than it did Tuesday. As of 6:30 p.m. Thursday, 303 coronavirus cases were recorded, with eight deaths. All the deceased were older than 65, with the exception of a 45-year-old female with an underlying health condition.

SCHOOLS

Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp Wednesday ordered all schools to stay closed for in-person instruction for the remainder of the academic year. Gwinnett County Public Schools and offices are closed through April 3 for Spring Break. Students will take a recess from Digital Learning Days, and schools will not provide student meals for pick-up or delivery during the break.
