BARROW COUNTY, GA — A man is dead after an attempted traffic stop Thursday morning in Auburn led to a chase, a wreck and a shootout.

The incident started when a Barrow County sheriff’s deputy tried to stop a Ford Fusion around 5:30 a.m., according to a statement from the Georgia Bureau of Investigation. The male driver did not stop, instead leading the deputy on a chase that ended when the Ford crashed into a power pole at the intersection near Browns Bridge Road and Bradford Park Lane.

As help arrived, the male driver threatened to shoot himself if officers approached. Deputies and police officers told him to put down his weapon. He responded by shooting at them. That’s when the officers shot back, according to the GBI statement. The driver was taken to a local hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.
