Tanker Carrying Liquid Glue Catches Fire on I-85

Northbound lanes were closed for about an hour early Tuesday on I-85 north of Ga. 316; about 10 gallons leaked out.

A tanker truck carrying liquid glue caught fire on Interstate 85 in Gwinnett County early Tuesday morning, shutting down all northbound lanes for about an hour.

Gwinnett Fire said the fire was reported at 1:17 a.m. on I-85 north of Ga. 316 and just south of Sugarloaf Parkway. Capt. Tommy Rutledge said crews arrived to find the rear axle and brakes underneath the tanker on fire.

From Gwinnett Fire news release:

Firefighters quickly deployed attack hose lines to control the blaze and shut down all northbound lanes of the interstate. The truck was carrying liquid glue, which was leaking from the damaged tanker. The fire department’s Hazmat Team was requested to stop the slow leak. It is estimated that approximately 10-gallons of product spilled on the ground. The tanker is from a company out of Illinois and was traveling through Gwinnett County. The driver noticed the fire and was able to pull the truck to the shoulder of the interstate and disconnected the cab from the tanker. The cab of the truck was not damaged. FD Hazmat Unit remains at the scene awaiting a (local) private clean-up company to arrive. There was no diesel fuel leak from the truck.

The fire was brought under control around 2:27 a.m., when two left lanes were reopened.
