Based on the preliminary investigation, the lead detective determined the following:

The driver of the tractor-trailer, Alfred Harris (age 48, Arkansas), was traveling eastbound on SR316 toward Athens in the slow lane. The driver of a tan Jeep Grand Cherokee, Lula Rome (age 85, Snellville), was originally traveling westbound on SR316 toward Lawrenceville in the fast lane.

For reasons unknown, Rome attempted to make a left turn from the fast lane of SR316 onto Winder Highway. As she was performing this maneuver, she turned into the path of the tractor-trailer, and the vehicles collided. The tractor-trailer jack-knifed and came to rest just beyond the intersection, and the Jeep overturned coming to rest in the grass.

The Jeep was impounded to Gwinnett County Police Department Headquarters, and the tractor-trailer was impounded to Lance Wrecker Service.
