Whataburger Considers Expansion Into Georgia, Metro Atlanta

Representatives of the popular Texas fast-food chain Whataburger reportedly have been scouting several Atlanta-area locations.

GWINNETT COUNTY, GA — Legendary Texas fast-food chain Whataburger is considering expanding into Georgia, with as many as 15 locations — including Buford, Cumming and Peachtree City — planned over the next few years.

No leases have been signed yet, according to real-estate sources who spoke with Tomorrow’s News Today Atlanta. However, representatives of Whataburger have been scouting metro Atlanta, with specific sites under review in Gwinnett, Forsyth and Fayette counties.

Whataburger is a quintessentially Texas burger joint that inspires tremendous loyalty among its fans — so much so that there’s even a Bring Whataburger to Atlanta Facebook page.

And, boy, were they excited when they heard the news.

A post announcing the expansion Thursday on the group’s wall already had been shared nearly 40 times in just 24 hours. The comments were universally positive, with many group members suggesting possible places to plant a Whataburger.

“I had dreams of this happening,” wrote one Facebook user.

“I hope so pleaseeee” wrote another Facebook user.

“Never again will I have to book a $60 red eye flight to Houston,” wrote yet another.

Whataburger has more than 840 locations, most of them in Texas. Currently, only one Whataburger — a Thomasville location that debuted in 2005 — is open in Georgia. Whataburgers in Valdosta and Brunswick opened and have since closed.

Whataburger, founded in 1950, is based in San Antonio. The chain was sold to a Chicago-based private-equity firm in 2019.
