Here are the top stories in Dallas-Hiram today:
- A local principal has won a prestigious award from the Georgia High School Association. Dr. Ryan Dyer, the assistant principal and athletic director at North Paulding High School, has been awarded a 2022-2023 Award of Excellence for demonstrating the highest level of sportsmanship, ethics, and integrity as a leader in high school athletics and activities. (Paulding County School District via Facebook)
- Paulding County residents should be aware that Conagra Brands, Inc. is recalling approximately 2,581,816 pounds of canned meat and poultry products due to a packaging defect that may lead to contamination without any outward signs. The affected products include several brands, such as Armour, Great Value, and Kroger, and were shipped to retail locations nationwide. Local stores in Paulding County are among the locations where the products were shipped. The recall was initiated after the establishment reported spoiled and/or leaking cans in their warehouse, and customers should look for the establishment number "P4247" on the cans to determine if they are affected. (Cobb County Courier)
- Georgia state legislators and civil rights organization NAACP have filed two federal complaints against nonprofit Wellstar Health System over the contentious closure of a financially failing Atlanta hospital, potentially violating the Civil Rights Act, according to one complaint. The shuttering of the facility, which served many low-income and Black residents, has led to accusations of discriminatory practices and health care redlining. Wellstar has denied any wrongdoing, claiming it is the largest provider of charity care in Georgia, and announced its search for a partner or buyer to keep the hospital open back in February 2020. (FierceHealthcare)
- Georgia Power customers will receive a "one-time credit" on their March bill, offering a bit of relief from the rising cost of living and inflation. The credit applies to customers with active accounts during 2022, with the amount depending on their energy usage. With the approaching summer and expected increase in electricity bills, the company's online resources may also provide valuable information on assistance for rent, utility, and food to help customers save money.
