Here are the top five stories today in Dallas-Hiram:

  1. A former Dallas Mayor has been chosen as the Northwest Georgia Regional Commission's new executive director. Boyd Austin began his new position on Friday. He succeeded Lloyd Frasier who served in the position for 10 years. The Northwest Georgia Regional Commission is one of 12 regional commissions in the state. (TimesFreePress.com)
  2. Dallas' State Senator Jason Anavitarte has been appointed to serve on the new Georgia Commission on Civics Education. The Republican state senator will begin his second term in January. The 17-member commission has been tasked with promoting civic engagement while enhancing the public school system's public service educational curriculum. (Northwest Georgia News)
  3. The Centers For Disease Control and Prevention has notified the community about a Listeria outbreak in Georgia. According to the agency, 23 people have been infected with the outbreak strain with one person dead and the rest hospitalized. Anyone over 65 years old and those with compromised immune systems are at an increased risk of infection. It is currently unclear what food item has caused the outbreak. (Georgia Patch)
  4. Dallas-Hiram area travelers will continue to breathe a little easier at the gas pump this holiday weekend. Georgia Governor Brian Kemp signed an executive order on Friday to extend the state's suspension of its gas tax. The gas tax holiday was set to expire on Jul. 14. Georgia's gasoline is currently less than the national average. (Atlanta Patch)
  5. Hiram, Georgia's sanitation schedule will be altered this week. The change is due to the Fourth of July holiday. According to the City of Hiram, sanitation will now be serviced on Wednesday, Jul. 6. (City of Hiram)
