COVID Booster Shots Available In Paulding For Immunocompromised

PAULDING COUNTY, GA — The Northwest District of the Georgia Department of Public Health is now providing COVID-19 booster shots for those who can self-attest to having a compromised immune system, either because of a medical condition or certain medications.

Currently, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is recommending that moderately to severely immunocompromised people receive an additional dose. This includes people who have:

• Been receiving active cancer treatment for tumors or cancers of the blood
• Received an organ transplant and are taking medicine to suppress the immune system
• Received a stem cell transplant within the last 2 years or are taking medicine to suppress the immune system
• Moderate or severe primary immunodeficiency (such as DiGeorge syndrome, Wiskott-Aldrich syndrome)
• Advanced or untreated HIV infection
• Active treatment with high-dose corticosteroids or other drugs that may suppress your immune response

Although you don’t need paper proof from a doctor of one of the above conditions, you should talk to your healthcare provider about your medical condition and whether getting an additional dose is appropriate for your.

People should get the same vaccine for their booster — Moderna or Pfizer — that they received for their first two shots. Citing lack of data, the CDC and the Food and Drug Administration have not yet issued guidance for those who received the Johnson & Johnson vaccine.

According to the CDC, the effects of a third dose will probably be similar for most to those experienced with the first two shots: fatigue, pain at the injection site and mild fluish symptoms.

These booster shots are only for those with compromised immune systems. The Biden administration announced Wednesday that COVID-19 booster shots would be available the week of Sept. 20 to everyone else already eligible for vaccination.
