Here are the top stories today in Dallas-Hiram:
- A man from Dallas has been arrested and charged with multiple offenses in connection with a drive-by shooting at a home in Holly Springs, North Georgia. The Holly Springs Police Department, along with the Paulding County Sheriff's Office, made the arrest after responding to a shooting at a house on Palm Street. Nance is facing charges of aggravated assault, aggravated family violence, criminal trespass, and possession of a firearm in the commission of a crime. It's unclear how many times he fired into the home or how many people were present during the shooting. (WSBTV)
- The Georgia Senate has rejected a bill to legalize sports betting in the state, which would have required a constitutional amendment and a referendum to be approved by voters. The proposed legislation included provisions to create a gaming commission to regulate and tax sports betting, with estimated annual revenues of $50 million. However, concerns about addiction and the cultural implications of legalizing sports betting prevented the bill from securing the required two-thirds majority in the Senate. (FOX 5 Atlanta)
- The National Lawyers Guild (NLG) and Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) have issued statements in response to the arrest of a legal observer during Sunday's violent incident outside the site of the future Atlanta Public Safety Training Facility. The SPLC called the arrest of its employee, acting as a legal observer on behalf of the NLG, heavy-handed law enforcement intervention against protesters. Several people were arrested after a group of violent agitators used the cover of the peaceful protest to infiltrate the area, change into black clothing, and launch a coordinated attack on construction equipment and police officers, throwing rocks, bricks, Molotov cocktails, and fireworks. - March is Social Work Month, a time to recognize and celebrate the invaluable contributions that social workers make to society. This year's theme, "Social Work Breaks Barriers," highlights the essential role that social workers play in breaking down systemic barriers and promoting social justice. The Paulding County School District is taking this opportunity to recognize the dedication and hard work of their social workers. (PCSD via Facebook)
