Here are the top five stories today in Dallas and Hiram:

  1. Funeral services for Marshall Ervin Jr. will be held today at West Ridge Church in Dallas. Ervin was one of two Cobb County deputies killed in the line of duty last week while serving a warrant at a home in Marietta. The service will begin at 2:00 p.m., and visitation opens at noon. (Patch)
  2. Two members of the Paulding County Fire Department (PCFD) were presented with the Medal of Valor, the department's highest honor, during the Board of Commissioners meeting on Tuesday. Firefighters Jeremy Nall and Chris Ward received the commendation for their heroic efforts to rescue four pediatric patients from a house fire on Jun. 24. The ceremony marked the second time the Medal of Valor has been awarded in the history of the PCFD. (Paulding County Fire/Rescue)
  3. The Miss Northwest Georgia Scholarship Organization crowned two new Paulding County representatives last Saturday. Georgia Southern University alumna Hannah Conway was crowned Miss Northwest Georgia 2023, and Cambridge High School senior Carys Feldman received the title of Miss Northwest Georgia's Outstanding Teen 2023. Both representatives will be at Pat's Apparel in Hiram this Saturday, Sep. 17, for a meet-and-greet beginning at 10:30 a.m. (The Dallas New Era)
  4. As a reminder, Fall Break takes place next week, Sep. 19 to 23, for all Paulding County School District schools. Classes will resume their regular schedule the following Monday, Sep. 26. District offices will remain open during the break next week. (Paulding County School District)
