Here are the top stories in Dallas-Hiram today:

  1. Carrollton High School's flex tight end Caleb Odom, one of the top prospects from Georgia, is receiving an official visit from the Miami Hurricanes. Last season, Odom's connection with 2026 quarterback Julian "Ju Ju" Lewis enabled them gain over 1,100 yards, which piqued the interest of numerous college football programs. Odom has already gotten scholarship offers from schools such as Alabama, Georgia, and LSU, among others. He is interested in Miami's tight end room and the school's record of developing athletes. Odom intends to make his college decision before the season begins. (FanNation)
  2. A homeowner in Smyrna shot and killed an attempted burglar on Sunday night, according to the local police. This is the second incident of a homeowner shooting someone who attempted to break into their home in Smyrna in less than a month. The police believe that the homeowner was acting in self-defense and have not released the identities of either party involved. A neighbor expressed concern for the safety of children in the community, who were shaken up by the incident. (WSB-TV)
  3. The residents of Mableton are in the process of setting up their new city after voting to split from Cobb County in November 2022. On Tuesday, the city will hold a special election to decide who will be its first-ever mayor and councilors in districts two, three, and five. Last month's election forced runoffs in all three districts, which early voting took place last week. The new city's establishment is seen as a way for Mableton residents to have more autonomy over zoning and development in the area. (Atlanta News First)
  4. Georgia experienced the most significant baby formula shortage in the United States, according to an analysis by drugwatch.com. Due to supply chain concerns and recalls, 94.4 percent of Georgia stores sold out of infant formula in the week ending May 28, 2022. Arizona, Mississippi, California, Nevada, Tennessee, Rhode Island, Louisiana, Florida, and Washington rounded out the top 10 states with the most severe shortages. The scarcity has been a concern for some families even a year after the initial incident. (WRDW)
  5. Specialist Bening Hellriegel, an arriving medic with the Georgia Army National Guard's 1st Squadron, 108th Cavalry Regiment, hails from Kennesaw. Hellriegel was unhappy with her civilian job and decided to join the Guard for combat medical training, which has now qualified her to serve as an EMT in the civilian sphere. During field training, she hopes to serve in a line unit. On April 15, a combined battle handoff ceremony at Fort Stewart's Donovan Field celebrated the end of initial active-duty training for 166 new Georgia Army National Guard soldiers, including Hellriegel, who joined their respective units.
