Here are the top stories in Dallas-Hiram today:
- JD Palm of McEachern High School was diagnosed with focal segmental glomerulosclerosis, a disorder that causes scar tissue to form in the kidney. Palm, who stands 6 feet, 10 inches tall and is ranked No. 12 in the nation by ESPN, has been plagued by headaches and exhaustion since being diagnosed with the condition. Palm recently had a catheter inserted in preparation for dialysis, which he will begin on April 24 and will eventually require a kidney transplant. A GoFundMe page has been launched to assist in raising funds to cover Palm's medical needs. (Yahoo!)
- Dr. Charles Frazier Stanley, well-known for his TV and radio programs, died on April 18 at the age of 90. Stanley's 65-year ministry was modeled after the apostle Paul's message in Acts 20:24, with a concentration on teaching practical, Christ-centered, biblically based concepts for everyday life. Stanley was the senior pastor of First Baptist Atlanta for 50 years and launched his radio ministry in 1972 with a 30-minute program called "The Chapel Hour." "In Touch with Dr. Charles Stanley," which developed out of "The Chapel Hour," achieved a countrywide audience in 1978, and Stanley's messages were heard in more than 1 million households by the 1980s. - Douglasville native Amari Robinson, a senior at Clemson University, will return to the team to take advantage of her fifth year of eligibility granted by the NCAA due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Robinson earned Second Team All-ACC honors and was named to the CSC Academic All-District team in what was perhaps her best season in a Clemson uniform. She led the Tigers in scoring, rebounding, and was second on the team in shooting percentage. Along with teammate Daisha Bradford, who will also return for her fifth year, Robinson helped guide the Tigers to a WNIT Super 16 appearance and two top-25 wins. (Clemson Tigers)
- A Mableton family is seeking justice for their loved one, 19-year-old Larry Potts, who was shot and killed at a gas station in Union City. Anthony Wilcox, 45, of Fairburn, was arrested in Boynton Beach, Florida, in connection with the murder. Surveillance footage showed Wilcox confronting Potts at the QuikTrip before opening fire on March 25, 2022. Potts' family has expressed relief at the news of Wilcox's arrest and is hoping for a full investigation into the incident. (Fox5)
- Experts at a perinatal mental health training session offered by Mercer University in Georgia are warning of a developing maternal mental health problem. Perinatal mood and anxiety disorders (PMADs), which include depression, anxiety, OCD, and sometimes psychosis, are widespread among new mothers, but diagnosis and therapy are not always available. In Georgia, about 700 women reported postpartum depression symptoms in 2020, with the number of unreported cases likely substantially higher. Georgia also has one of the country's worst rates of maternal mortality. Education on the diagnosis and treatment of PMADs is rarely included in medical school curricula, and there is a mental health provider deficit in practically every county in Georgia. (GPB)
