National Beer Day: Where To Hoist A Mug In Dallas And Hiram

DALLAS-HIRAM, GA — Thursday is National Beer Day. Yes, really. Who knew?

So why is it?

April 7 is the day in 1933 when the Cullen-Harrison Act was signed into law, effectively ending Prohibition. The Constitutional amendment prohibiting manufacture and sale of alcohol was repealed later that year.

The U.S. celebration started in 2009 as a joke between friends — drinking beer, of course — at a Buffalo Wild Wings in Richmond, Virginia.

Justin Smith later explained to Richmond news station WTVR-TV that a waiter had just told him it was “National Beer Day,” then walked away. The comment piqued Smith’s interest, which led him to discover that National Beer Day was an “Icelandic holiday” celebrating the end of Prohibition.

One of Smith’s buddies suggested the U.S. should have its own celebration, which eventually led to Smith establishing a National Beer Day Facebook page for his nascent holiday. Because all things are possible when you’re enjoying a frosty mug, right?

The Brewers Association of America learned of it, then social media caught fire with it. Which is why you’re now enjoying a beer. And if you’re not, you should be.
