- Chuck Payne, R-Dalton has been appointed by Lt. Gov. Burt Jones to serve as a member of the Georgia Commission on Civics Education. Payne helped establish the commission last year and is eager to work with his colleagues, including Sen. Freddie Powell Sims, D-Dawson, and Sen. Jason Anavitarte, R-Dallas, to promote and enhance civics education for all Georgians. The commission, which was established pursuant to Senate Bill 220 that Payne sponsored and passed during the 2022 legislative session, is tasked with reviewing civic education in Georgia schools, with a focus on CTAE, instruction for the government and public administration, and the law, public safety, corrections and security pathways. - Calling all birdwatchers and nature lovers in Georgia! Get ready for the annual spring migration of tiny hummingbirds as they make their way to their northern mating grounds and local homes. The migrating masses are expected to arrive in our area later in March and continue throughout April. Keep an eye out for these solitary flyers as they stop frequently to feed on nectar-producing flowers and insects. Be sure to submit your sightings to help track the migration schedule and share your admiration for these unique creatures! (DeanLand via Newsbreak)
- The 17th annual Albany marathon in Georgia was attended by over 700 runners, including John Fodge from Dallas, who just ran his 19th state run and plans to do all 50 states. The race, which saw a 20 percent drop in participants from the previous year, also had a new sponsor, Combos, instead of Snickers. While some racers had a rocky start due to a police officer accidentally leading them down the wrong route, many still enjoyed the event and looked forward to future races, with a new running club starting in Albany to help runners train.
