Here are the top stories in Dallas-Hiram today:
- Residents living near Paulding Industrial Boulevard in Dallas are opposing the proposed construction of a trash transfer station on the outskirts of downtown Dallas. The facility is being planned by Paulding County Commissioner Brian Stover, who claims that it would cut down on truck traffic, but the locals are concerned about the potential noise, smell, and decrease in property values. The Dallas City Council is expected to vote on whether to rezone the land for its construction. (WSB-TV)
- The Bowdon Police Department has announced that K-9 Officer Jett, who was reported missing from the City of Bowdon, has been found safe in Carroll County. Jett's kennel door was open when the officer arrived home on Saturday night, and the dog was last spotted around Roy Banor Road. The police department had asked for the community's help in locating Jett and urged anyone who had seen the dog to contact them or call 911. (11Alive)
- Georgia residents, please check your fridge for bagged salads as Fresh Express has issued a recall for multiple varieties of its branded and private label salad kits due to the potential presence of listeria monocytogenes. The recall affects three salad kits labeled as either Fresh Express or Publix brands and sold in retail stores in Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Virginia. If you have any of the recalled salad kits in your fridge, do not consume them and instead throw them away or return them to the place of purchase for a refund. Most people infected with listeria may experience short-term symptoms, but it can cause serious infections in young children, older individuals, those with weakened immune systems, and people who are pregnant. - The City of Austell is preparing for its first-ever Juneteenth celebration on June 17th, which includes a festival and a parade, commemorating June 19, 1865, when enslaved African Americans in Galveston, Texas, finally received the news that they were free. The parade will start at 11:15 a.m. in downtown Austell and will continue to Legion Park. Festivities begin at noon and will include stilt walkers, African drummers, story tellers, live music, a game truck, face painters, food trucks and arts & crafts vendors. Admission is free, and all vendors are welcome to participate. (Subscription: MDJ)
