Here are the top stories today in Decatur-Avondale Estates:

  1. Yesterday, March 8, the Community Housing Capital (CHC) made an announcement that there will be $34 million in funding made available for affordable housing to be used for "people of color." The CHC BIPOC Affordable Housing Development Fund (“BIPOC Fund”) is a combination of a $17 million commitment from Arnold Ventures and an additional $17 million from CHC’s own capital. It has been reported that CHC intends to address racial inequality in the housing market. This will include 12 southern states and Washington, D.C., thus decreasing the racial wealth gap. The lack of housing security and housing affordability plays a major role in the prevention of building wealth within the "Black" communities. “The BIPOC housing fund will infuse capital into minority-led organizations that have been denied wealth-building opportunities for far too long,” said President and CEO of Community Housing Capital., Cindy Holler. This funding is the change that many have been fighting for. (PR Web)
  2. The deadline for homeowners to apply for any new homestead tax exemptions in Decatur is fast approaching. March 15 is the final date for submissions. Eligibility requirements can be found on the website- https://www.decaturga.com/homestead, email- taxes@decaturga.com, or by calling 404-370-4100. (Decaturish.com)
  3. Councilwoman Liliana Bakhtiari was one of several attendees at the City Council meeting on Monday. The topic at hand was regarding jurisdiction and which agency has authority over the soon-to-be Atlanta Public Safety training center. The property is located in DeKalb County but leased by the Atlanta Police Foundation. Bakhtiari pointed out that there have been police and firefighters at the location, but they have no legal jurisdiction, which she stated is a problem. (Decaturish.com)
