National Beer Day: The Best Beer Joints In Decatur

DECATUR, GA -- When you enter a bar, it'd be nice if it was a place that had not only good beer, but good cheer. You know, a place "where everybooody knows your name." While the "Cheers" bar is made for TV, in reality, the Atlanta-area has some spots that come awfully close.

Whether you like ale, lager, a porter, or some other type of beer, we can all agree atmosphere, vibe and other intangibles contribute to the values of a nice beer spot. With that in mind, Decatur has had a beer renaissance as of late, with several establishments touting their wares not as "bars" or "taverns" but as "breweries."

In honor of National Beer Day, here are some Decatur joints where you can indulge in some good beer and cheer:

Wild Heaven Craft Beers: 135b Maple St Decatur, GA 30030. A Yelper says: “Invocation, Ode to Mercy, Eschaton and Civilization are all amazing representations of their respective beer styles.”

The Pinewood - 254 W Ponce De Leon Ave Decatur, GA 30030. Great beers in this downtown Decatur spot. And a special shoutout to "Whiskey Wednesdays" here, where you can enjoy a stiff drink for $5. A Yelper says: “Add some AMAZING hushpuppies and an order of tater tots and your happy hour is complete.”

The Iberian Pig -- 121 Sycamore St Decatur, GA 30030. A Yelper says: “This is a must-visit restaurant in Atlanta, also something I'll miss if I left ATL.” We agree, enjoy a cold one here and if you're in the mood, the bacon-infused "Old Fashioned."

Dugan's Tavern -- 5922 Memorial Dr Stone Mountain, GA 30083. A Yelper says: "The bartenders (Mike, Mark & Shae) are ON POINT, so if you have a low tolerance, don't gon in there asking for strong drinks, THEY WILL put you on your a[**].”

Scout -- 321 W Hill St Decatur, GA 30030. While it's a relative newcomer to the restaurant scene, Scout has an expansive bar with friendly bartenders that give you that down-home feel. A Yelper says: “Scout is a great addition to the restaurant offerings in Oakhurst and has one of the best bartenders in Atlanta (Nate).”

The Square Pub -- 115 Sycamore St Decatur, GA 30030. A Yelper says: "“I've been here for brunch and pub grub, all of which has been very good, but what I usually come here for is the Rum Runner.”
