Burglary Suspect Shot By DeKalb Police
Police were responding Sunday morning to a reported burglary in Stone Mountain.
DECATUR, GA -- The Georgia Bureau of Investigation has taken over the case of a police-related shooting in Stone Mountain on Sunday morning. The incident happened in the 5100 block of West Mountain Road when homeowners reported an unknown person inside their residence. A suspect now identified as Mark Freeman, 53, was reported by witnesses as leaving the house with a shotgun.
Stone Mountain police responded to the call, along with DeKalb police, according to the GBI. Officers made contact with Freeman when he allegedly tried to enter a business in the 6200 block of E. Ponce de Leon Avenue.
Police said they commanded Freeman to drop the shotgun, but said he refused. A DeKalb officer then shot Freeman, who was taken to Grady Memorial Hospital. No officers were injured in the incident, which happened less than 24 hours after a Savannah police officer was shot and killed during a traffic stop of a vehicle suspected to have been used in a robbery.
