Here are the top three stories today in Decatur-Avondale Estates:

  1. The North Decatur cityhood movement has reportedly gone "dormant" due to a lack of legislative support. The proposed City of North Decatur would extend from Embry Hills in the north, all the way to Atlanta, Decatur, and Avondale Estates in the south. However, according to a signed statement from North Decatur Cityhood Initiative board members, the board "[does] not have the legislative consensus needed to move a cityhood bill in the legislature in a manner that would be conducive to the community building necessary." (Reporter Newspapers)
  2. Decatur's iWag is waiving all adoption fees and offering heavy discounts on training packages. The dog rescue and shelter is scheduled to be demolished this fall for a new mixed-use development, leaving 19 dogs in need of a home by the end of August. To facilitate the matching process, iWag has been hosting adoption days on Saturdays from 10:00 a.m. to noon at 715 East College Avenue. (Decaturish.com)
  3. Construction has begun on the Oak Cottage Court project on Commerce Drive in Decatur. Oak Cottage Court would feature six homes, ranging in size from one-three bedrooms, with estimated sales prices between $199,000 and $275,000. The project broke ground earlier this month, and contractors are currently working on grading and removing unhealthy trees. (Decaturish.com)
