COVID-19 Case Cancels A DeKalb High School Football Game

Two days ahead of the 2021 high school football season kickoff, DeKalb County School District canceled one of the games Friday due to COVID.

DEKALB COUNTY, GA — DeKalb County School District officials canceled a high school football game scheduled Friday due to COVID-19 concerns, a district spokesperson told Patch.

The McNair High School vs. Forest Park High School football game, which would have taken place at Buck Godfrey Stadium at 7:30 p.m. Friday, was canceled because someone in the McNair football program tested positive for COVID-19.

"The safety and well-being of or students and staff remains a top priority," the district said in a statement. "Out of abundance of caution, the football game between McNair High School and Forest Park High School scheduled for Aug. 20 has been canceled due to a positive COVID-19 case within McNair’s program."

The district would not clarify if it was a McNair player, coach or staff member who tested positive for COVID-19. If the game gets rescheduled, the district will announce a new date at that time.

This is the first announced cancellation or postponement for the 2021 season. Most other Georgia State High School Association football teams are scheduled to start the season this week.
