Decatur Police Charge Teen in Bike Theft

A citizen witnessed the theft and contacted police.

This information comes from a Decatur police report.

A resident of the 100 block of McClean Street told police he saw three people who appeared to be teenagers walking down the street about 9:15 p.m. Jan. 2. One of the males walked up to a neighbor's porch, took a mountain bike and walked away with it, the man said.

The neighbor contacted police, who talked to the owner and got a description of the bike. About 20 minutes later, police contacted the bike owner and neighbor and said they'd located the bike and the suspect in the 1400 block of Deerwood Drive.

The owner and neighbor were taken there in a patrol car. The owner identified the bike. The neighbor looked at the suspect and said he was "pretty sure" that's who took the bike.

A 17-year-old Decatur resident was charged with theft by taking. The bike was valued at $160. Police found another bike and a cell phone reported stolen from Jacksonville, Fla.
