Here are the top stories in Decatur-Avondale Estates today:

  1. ReLeaf DeKalb is back for the second year. DeKalb County and Trees Atlanta's Front Yard Tree program is accepting volunteers for its tree planting initiative. In order to receive services residents must meet certain qualifications. The two aspects of the program are residential front yards and public properties. Planting the trees will help increase DeKalb’s tree canopy and benefits the ecosystem. If you're looking to increase your volunteer hours and like to be part of bettering the environment and the community, this could be the event for you. (Press Release Desk)
  2. The city of Decatur has been recognized and recertified as a Green Community. The certification was given by the Atlanta Regional Commission on its platinum level. The program, which started in 2009, awards communities that make a positive contribution to the environment. Decatur was awarded for making it a requirement for all new commercial and residential buildings to be certified under its green building program, which promotes a more sustainable city. The city has also moved in the direction of becoming solar-ready, offering residential rooftop solar photovoltaic panel installations and more. (Decaturish.com)
  3. The Avondale Estates Downtown Development Authority unanimously approved the development of the Avondale Estates Town Green at its meeting on Jan. 10. The Town Green mixed-use project will consist of two two-story buildings facing the Town Green along North Avondale Road. The neighborhood will have full-service restaurants with outdoor dining with views of the park, event space, and retail shops flowing into downtown. (Decaturish.com)
