Here are the top three stories today in Decatur-Avondale Estates:
- Members of the Decatur School Board will review a proposed policy that would take recess away from students as punishment. A recently-passed Georgia law makes recess time mandatory for elementary students, with some exceptions, according to the Associated Press. The draft of the policy will reportedly be edited with recommendations from the Board, then reviewed once again before final voting. (Decaturish.com)
- The DeKalb County Board of Health is hosting monkeypox vaccination events today (Thursday, Aug. 11) and tomorrow (Friday, Aug. 12). The events will be held at the North DeKalb Health Center, less than a half hour out from both Decatur and Avondale Estates. The Board reports it will hold more vaccination events in the coming weeks. (Decaturish.com)
- Two daycare workers, including a Decatur resident, are facing charges of felony child abuse. Decatur resident Autumn Coney and Lithonia resident Bernetta Glover are accused of abusing a three-year-old boy in their care; the boy's mother provided video surveillance footage to the Clarkson Police Department. Coney has been released on bond; Glover remains in custody without bond. (On Common Ground News)
