Here are the top stories today in Decatur-Avondale Estates:

  1. The Decatur Book Festival announced on Monday that it is taking a break in 2023. Their website announced they plan to return in 2024. The festival attracted an estimated 80,000 people in the past. Attendees enjoyed live music, parades and cooking demonstrations. The festival began in 2006, featured over 3,500 authors,and was once the largest independent book festivals in the country. (FOX 5 Atlanta)
  2. The Decatur City Commission approved the parks and recreation master plan. The meeting was held on March 14, during the commission's regular meeting. The recommendations within The Decatur Planning Commission, Recreatur Recommendations, could cost up to $150 million.(Decaturish.com )
  3. Georgia's State House voted 96-75 to ban hormone therapy and gender-affirming surgery for transgender minors. The vote came in on Thursday and still requires the final approval by the Senate. The House vote reportedly demonstrated strength in support from the Republican Party. (NewsBreak Original)

The Briarlake Elementary School Foundation's annual fundraising Auction and Beer Festival is scheduled to be held tomorrow on Thursday, March 23rd. 100% of the proceeds will go towards supporting Briarlake Elementary School students.   5. An adult Easter Egg Hunt is scheduled for April 1 during one of the DeKalb County Department of Recreation, Parks and Cultural Affairs Easter Egg Hunt events. The event will be held at the Midway Recreation Center, 3118 Midway Road in Decatur between 2:00 p.m.- 5:00 p.m. (Press Release Desk)
